Seven ways to beat workout boredom

When boredom threatens to turn your exercise routine into exactly that – a routine, it’s time to introduce a little variety.

Choose an activity you enjoy

This may be stating the obvious, but nothing is likely to sound the death knell of your exercise more than if you’re doing it because you feel you have to, instead of because you want to. Nowadays, gyms offer a myriad of classes, equipment and circuits from which you can choose: from Zumba and yoga to Boot Camp and boxing. Personal trainers can advise on exercise combinations and how to use the equipment properly if you have a specific goal in mind. Variety will keep you motivated. But don’t force yourself to do a spinning class when what you really feel like doing is swimming.

Find a partner

A workout or training partner can be a great motivator: Firstly, because you can encourage each other to reach your respective goals and, secondly, you become accountable to someone other than yourself. Not showing up for a session becomes less of an option if someone is waiting for you. Needless to say, choose a training partner whose company you enjoy and avoid those who may have drill-sergeant aspirations.

Head outdoors

Running, walking and cycling outdoors is a refreshing change from working out at the gym. Aside from the fresh air, it’s also a good opportunity to explore your surroundings. Invite a family member to join you or take the dog along. Your ‘best friend’ will be delighted and chances are you’ll turn a solo mission into a social one.

Multitask

Listening to music, watching a video or reading a book (okay, the latter may depend on how fast you’ve set the machine) while you’re busy on the stair stepper or treadmill will help pass the time and offer some entertainment too.

Set realistic (small) goals

It’s inevitable that boredom may creep in if you feel like your fitness levels are not improving. Don’t reach for the stars when you’re just starting out. Join a local walking group and start with the beginners and build distance up over time. Set measurable goals that you can enjoy with like-minded people. Similarly, team or groups sports and activities are a great way to keep fit and stay social. Find out if there is a tennis, cricket, soccer, badminton or hiking club in your area.

Play!

Interactive video games like Nintendo Wii Fit and the like, offer engaging home workouts – from balance and posture exercises to action and adventure games. Add these to your regular workout to introduce a bit of fun and variety.

Get App savvy

There are a number of great Apps that can turn a workout into an adventure. Top of the list are Teemo (scale Mount Everest or trek through the desert), Ingress (explore your city finding historical landmarks), Zombies, Run! (this one speaks for itself), and Fitocracy, an interactive app that connects you to others who are also on a mission to get fit.
